Kissing Frogs

Today marks my 10th anniversary at Mercia Ventures.

After I successfully exited my business, I was certainly not ready to retire and was hungry to develop new business and career opportunities. I had a 3 year non compete around spine and orthopaedics, which I wanted to respect, but I had spent the previous 15 years building a network exclusively in this industry so I set myself a challenge I called “Kissing 100 Frogs”.

What did this mean?

The phrase "kissing a frog" comes from the fairy tale "The Frog Prince," where a princess kisses a frog, which then transforms into a prince.  In researching for this blog, I was surprised to read a number of theories behind the meaning of this story but the reason I used it for my challenge was based on it symbolising the idea that taking a chance may lead to something positive.

My challenge involved getting to know 100 people I had not dealt with previously in order to develop a new network.  I set up a spreadsheet to track it and was pleased that within eight months I had achieved my goal.  My reflections and observations were -

You never know what may happen from the meeting  - this happened every time before the meeting.

You meet interesting people with a great personal story - this happened almost every time.

They often introduce you to more interesting people - this happened very often.

It might be that you find you can help them in some way - this happened more than once.

It might be that you find they can help you in some way - this happened more than once.

It might be that they teach you something new whether it be a technology, an industry or a business model - this happened almost every time.

It might be that they have an interesting project for you to get involved in  - this happened involving the NHS and an investment fund we subsequently set up.

It might be that a couple of years later they call you and ask you to join their team  - this happened when the Mercia founder and CEO Mark (frog number 27!) rang me and invited me to join the team and make the transition from entrepreneur to VC 10 years ago!

I will always be a great believer in networking.  Whilst digital engagement has improved our efficiencies, I believe business is a contact sport and to develop your new network you have to have physical interactions to truly develop personal relationships.

Since my first 100 Frog Challenge, I continue to push myself to network and gain the benefits listed above. Whilst it takes effort, the potential for serendipity makes it worthwhile.  It’s subsequently led to meeting someone who then bought another of my businesses, a number of new investments and many interesting new Frogs!

In a broader context, "kissing a frog" can represent:

  1. Embracing the Unattractive: Engaging with people or situations that may not seem appealing at first but have potential for growth or beauty.

  2. Taking Risks: Being willing to take risks in love, relationships, or life choices, with the belief that something good may come from it.

  3. Personal Growth: The idea that through challenges or difficult experiences, one can emerge transformed or enlightened.

Overall, it conveys a message about looking beyond appearances and being open to possibilities.

As with most fairy tales, this story was used to teach some higher or moral truth. Such as there are rewards for showing integrity in keeping your promises. There is also value for not being superficial and the need to appreciate the inner person despite outward appearances.

Dusty McGarry also adds an additional lesson which can also be beneficial for the teaching of this story.

Networking is crucial for creating serendipitous opportunities and chance encounters that can advance your career. Here are some key benefits:

  • Expands your perspective. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds exposes you to new ideas and viewpoints you may not encounter otherwise. This can spark creativity and innovative thinking.

  • Facilitates unexpected connections. The more people you meet, the higher the probability of a fortuitous link - someone who can provide an introduction, job lead, or key piece of advice. Successful people are well-networked.

  • Builds social capital. A strong network enables you to tap into the resources, knowledge, and influence of your connections when needed. This social capital is invaluable for career growth.

  • Reveals new possibilities. Conversations may uncover opportunities you never considered, like an intriguing side project, job opening, or mutually beneficial partnership. An open mind is key.

Embrace a mindset of curiosity and you'll discover exciting new paths.

In today's dynamic business environment, networking has become an indispensable tool for professionals and organizations aiming to achieve sustained success. Beyond the traditional exchange of business cards, effective networking fosters meaningful relationships that can lead to numerous advantages, including access to new opportunities, knowledge sharing, and personal development.

Access to Opportunities

One of the most significant benefits of networking is the access it provides to various opportunities. Engaging with a diverse group of professionals can lead to job offers, partnerships, and collaborations that might not be publicly advertised. According to Michael Page, networking offers access to job opportunities, professional connections, career advice, new ideas, and valuable information.

Knowledge Sharing and Innovation

Networking serves as a conduit for the exchange of ideas and best practices. Interacting with professionals from different industries and backgrounds can introduce new perspectives, fostering innovation. University Lab Partners highlights that the benefits of networking include improved social well-being, increased innovation, strengthened connections with other professionals, and enhanced professional interactions.

Building Professional Relationships

Establishing and nurturing professional relationships is at the core of effective networking. These relationships can lead to mentorship opportunities, collaborative projects, and a supportive community that contributes to career advancement. Forbes emphasizes that networking is not only about trading information but also serves as an avenue to create long-term relationships with mutual benefits.

Enhancing Business Growth

For businesses, networking can be a catalyst for growth. By connecting with other businesses, entrepreneurs can identify potential partners, clients, and investors. Keiser University notes that networking in business refers to an intentional practice of meeting others in the field, making connections, and building meaningful professional relationships.

Personal Development and Confidence Building

Networking also plays a crucial role in personal development. Engaging with a variety of professionals can enhance communication skills, boost self-confidence, and provide insights into different career paths and industries. Seacoast Bank points out that from opportunities and connections to increased confidence, small business networking is crucial for growing your business.

Strategies for Effective Networking

To maximize the benefits of networking, it's essential to approach it strategically:

  • Set Clear Goals: Determine what you aim to achieve through networking, whether it's finding new clients, seeking mentorship, or exploring job opportunities.

  • Be Genuine: Authenticity fosters trust. Focus on building genuine relationships rather than merely collecting contacts.

  • Provide Value: Offer assistance, share knowledge, and be a resource to others in your network.

  • Follow Up: After initial meetings, maintain contact through follow-up messages or meetings to strengthen the relationship.

  • Utilize Online Platforms: Leverage professional networking platforms like LinkedIn to connect with individuals beyond your immediate geographic area.

Conclusion

In conclusion, networking is a vital component of professional and business success. By actively engaging in networking activities, individuals and organizations can unlock new opportunities, foster innovation, build meaningful relationships, and drive growth. Investing time and effort into developing a robust professional network can yield significant long-term benefits.
