“Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

I first came across these words when reading about Margaret Thatcher and wrote them down in my notes I keep on my computer for personal development.  It is apparently attributed to a US businessman Frank Outlaw in the 1970s and I think these words sum up so many things around leadership such as positive psychology, discipline, consistency, culture and legacy.

It all starts with thoughts.  We all have an internal voice speaking hundreds of words a minute.  It is so important that on balance more thoughts are positive and intentional.  As an example if we think we might or could do something, it is highly likely we will get a different outcome compared to if we think we will do something. The more intentional your thinking, the more intentional your leadership.

Leaders shape culture through language and words either elevate or erode motivation and culture.

A careless or negative remark from a leader can demoralise a team. As an example a CEO telling their team, “We will win by being the most customer-obsessed company in the world.” has a very different impact compared to something less intentional or even worse nothing at all.

Words matter, but actions prove authenticity. You have to practice what you preach and act as a role model demonstrating your company values on a consistent basis that turns into habits.

Remember something I have written previously, team members are always watching the leader even when you don’t realise it.  It’s important for leaders to identify 2–3 keystone habits that you want to define your leadership (e.g., weekly one-to-ones, or consistent feedback) and practice them relentlessly until they become part of your natural rhythm.

Habits over time shape character. Character is not the image leaders project—it’s who they are when no one is watching.

In leadership, character then shapes destiny - the legacy they leave behind.

This is not determined by chance, I think effective leadership is about recognising that every decision, every word, and every action has a ripple effect that shapes teams, cultures, and ultimately outcomes.

The greatest leaders are not those who master external tools, but those who master themselves.

By working on their thoughts, they become words, words become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, and character becomes destiny.

Do this consistently, and your destiny as a leader will take care of itself.
